The very mention of the term Ayurveda invokes a curative feeling from within. Ayurveda, as we all know, is recognized for its unparalleled power of healing. Popular since the era of antiquity, this form of traditional medicine although got surpassed because of the foreign influences on the world of medical science in the middle, it has been witnessing a resurgence all over again. Ayurveda and oil massages are inseparable

The Bruhat (major) and Laghu (major) trayi (treatises) of Ayurveda say that one should include Abhyangam in dincharya (daily practices) in order to maintain health and well-being. The advocates of Ayurveda also claim that practicing Abhyanga which is a therapeutic everyday helps in bringing the agitated doshas back to normal along with a number of other benefits.


Abhyangam – the types

There are a number of Abhyangam massages described in Ayurveda. Let’s take a quick look at some of the major ones–

  •  Vata har (for pacifying of vata dosh)
  •  Shram har (for reliving fatigue)
  •  Jarahar (for fighting the signs of aging)
  •  Ayukar (for long life)
  •  Pushtikar (for increasing strength)

  •  Drishti Prasad Kar (for improving vision)
  •  Swapna Kar (for inducing good sleep)

Abhyangam – the procedure

The entire process of Abhyangam is done on the top of a wooden table that is especially designed and known as Droni and takes around 45 minutes to 60 minutes to complete the session. Once it is over, the person taking the massage is, first of all, asked to take a steam bath and then a hot shower for complete relaxation.
Only trained masseurs or Ayurvedic physicians are allowed to perform the massage. Sesame oil is generally used as the base oil that’s infused with selected herbs. These herbs are infused according to the doshic type (specific health condition) of the person willing to take the massage. The way of massaging as well as the right oil is selected by experts only. Therefore, you need not to worry at all.

The massage session starts with prayers. Thereafter, the herb-infused oil is applied followed by massage in the following postures in the following order –

  • Sitting
  • Lying face upwards
  • Lateral (Right)
  • Lying face down
  • Lateral (Left)
  • Flat
  • Sitting
