Elakizhi Ayurvedic Treatment – Let the Leaves Take Away Your Pain

So, what is Elakizhi all about?

Let’s get started with the literal meaning of Elakizhi before knowing how it works and how it is done. Elakizhi is a combination of 2 Malayalam words – Ela and Kizhi. Ela means leaves and Kizhi means potli or bundle. It is considered to be very effective on ailments related to nervous system, bones, and muscles.

How Elakizhi is done?

Here is how Elakizhi is performed –

  • First of all, leaves with vata-controlling qualities are collected. It is made sure that the leaves are fresh. Some of the most frequently used leaves include – leaves of Adatoda vasica (Malabar Nut), tamarind, drumsticks, Calatropis gigentica (Crown Flower), Vitex negundo (Nirgundi) etc.
  • Secondly, the freshly collected leaves are chopped and blended with freshly grated coconut, rock salt, and lemon. The number of ingredients to be blended depends on the severity of the health conditions.
  • Thirdly, the mixture of the above-mentioned ingredients is fried in medicated oil, basically sesame oil.
  • Lastly, once the preparation is ready, it is separated into 4 equal portions and tightened in the form of potlis or boluses in a cloth. Thereafter, these potlis are put in an oil-filled container that is further heated. It is the same oil that was used for frying the ingredients.

After everything is ready, a gentle massage is given to the patient for around 10 minutes to 15 minutes. Thereafter, the potlis are used for giving the massage with the temperature set at 46 degrees Celcius. To make sure that the optimum temperature is maintained the potli is heated whenever necessary. After the completion of the massage, the body of the patient is thickly blanketed for around 30 minutes. In the end, the patient is asked to take a hot water shower for complete relaxation.
